Personally, I’ve never really been a fan of Enter Shikari.
After many praises from various people, I did decide to check A Flash Flood of
Colour out and see if it could sway my opinion.
For starters, if you don’t like British accents, you will
despise this album, but if you do, then there’s something in it for you.
Enter Shikari use a mix of electro with post-hardcore and
rock elements. With the amount of bands today doing this, they still seem to be
pioneers and keep the genre fresh and original. Despite having a lot of
electronica, you won’t find any ‘dubstep’, whether this is a good or bad thing,
is up to you, as it seems to plaguing a lot of music nowadays.
A Flash Flood of Colour is a mix of pump tracks, as the
electronica usually does this well, and slower and more meaningful songs. This
may be the only problem on the album, as heavier and slower songs are just
randomly put throughout the album, sort of upsetting the flow.
Lyrically, anti-government and anti-war are very apparent
and is one of the contributing factors that attract me to this album the most.
The lyrics aren’t corny, are very engaging and really make you think about the
type of world you live in. The start of ‘Gandhi Mate, Gandhi’ has such a well
done spoken word build up, followed up by an impressive electronica riff. The
various sort of electronica ‘breakdowns’ are well executed throughout the album
which give the album the spice it needs to stay unique.
A Flash Flood of Colour is a very accessible album for
people that may not really be into that post-hardcore genre. That’s what makes
Enter Shikari so good at what they do and why they have so many fans. Stand out
tracks are the jumpy feel good: ‘Warm Smiles Do Not Make You Welcome Here’, aggressive
‘Gandhi Mate, Gandhi’, the heavy ‘Meltdown’ and the heartfelt ‘Constellations’.
This album will keep pre-existing fans extremely happy, while also being a
great starter album for someone looking into getting Enter Shikari. A Flash
Flood of Colour will just downright make you feel good, as it has many
memorable songs with anti-establishment lyrics and awesome electronica elements.
